13th January : Defender's day

Laba diena everybody,

Today I would speak about the Defender's day, a very important day in every Lithuanian minds.

Each 13th January, Lithuanian people commemorate the 13th January 1991 events : the Soviet Union attempted to take by force the Vilnius TV Tower, killed 14 people and injured more than 1000 civilians people. The Soviet Union didn't admit Lithuania as an independent country when Lithuanian government declared itself free from the URSS on 11th March 1990.

With those information, you could understand why this tragic day is really important for them and have particular meaning.

On 13th January 2015, I went as well as every morning to school at 8:10 a.m. I saw candles behind windows when I was walking.
When I entered on the school, there were no light, as the sun didn't rise yet, it was quite dark. I climbed the stairs to reach my class, seeing no light from outside. When I entered, the children were sit and the teacher started to remind them what happened 24 years ago.

Children listened silently the teacher. Then at 10 am, all classes met in the big hall. The commemoration started by the melody of the Lithuania anthem. We all stand up to sing. Then Arturas put on the screen 2 videos with pictures of this famous day.
The children sung those songs :

That was really impressive, and we could see the emotion on every children, teachers and educators faces.
Children lighted up 14 candles for the victims, afterwards, one by one, they came to put them below the small representation of the TV Tower in clay.
I was totally overwhelm by this solidarity and this proud of being independent, to get rid of the URSS holding, even those tragic things happened...

I will keep this day in mind!

Iki,

Emily
